How do Facial Wrinkles and Lines appear on our skin?

Facial wrinkles are among the most disliked features that happen to both men and women. They are an inevitable part of aging and even the youth are prone to wrinkles and facial lines. The age old debate that surrounds facial wrinkles and lines are that how do we get them and how to actually get rid of them.

One misconception that has been floating around for many years is that if you have facial wrinkles, there must be something wrong with your skin. This myth has been propagated by cosmetic product companies and has been kept alive by many ill-informed websites on the internet. To rest the myth at peace once and for all, there is no connection of wrinkles and the health of your skin. Even healthy skin gets facial wrinkles. They are the result of our daily schedule and the normal wear and tear that our skin suffers on daily basis.

Structure of our skin

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It is also one of the toughest organs of the body as it faces and neutralizes a lot of threats on daily basis. To do this, our skin has a very unique structure. The upper layer is known as epidermis. It is made up of dead skin cells, hardened cellular structures that form the shield against the foreign elements. This is the defensive layer of the skin that protects the inner layer, the dermis. Dermis is what actually gives your skin its suppleness. It is mainly made up of collagen, a naturally occurring material that gives your skin volume and its padded feel. Dermis also has fibres that allow your skin to stretch and contract without breaking open.

A fine layer of muscles, nerves and blood capillary lie beneath the dermis. These muscles are essential to the various movements of your face. Every time you adopt a facial expression, this network gets to work in maintaining it for as long as you want.

Causes behind wrinkles on the skin

Wrinkles are small furrows in the skin. They wary in depth because of their appearance. Some facial wrinkles form in just the epidermis and are narrow and almost invisible in the start. Overtime, these facial wrinkles become noticeable. Facial wrinkles that form in both dermis and epidermis are usually deeper with thicker borders.

The first lines appear in the dermis, m ade out of collagen. Because of aging and other related factors, collagen starts to go dry. This leads to the formation of small fine wrinkles in dermis that eventually lead to visible wrinkles in the epidermis.

Another reason of the facial wrinkles is the loss of fat caused by the advancing years. This fat is one of the most essential components of our skin. It gives our skin its volume and tautness. It is the pad that actually helps fight the facial wrinkles by making sure that the layers of the skin remain supple and damage free.
Once this fat starts to disappear, there is nothing to prevent the sagging of the skin. This is bad news for your face because sagging skin means extra skin bunched up in folds. This is a sure sign that facial wrinkles are about to appear on your face.
