Tanning beds being widely used despite cancer warnings

Scientist, researchers and medical experts have recently established credible links between tanning beds, booths and other such implements causing high rates of Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma. Despite publicly issuing warnings against their use these implements used for bestowing artificial tans are being widely used specially by young women. The most shocking aspect is that these young women claimed being aware of the potential health risks even then chose to opt for indoor tanning and continued to use it. This fact was made public by University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The study, co-authored by UNC Lineberger members Seth M. Noar, PhD, of the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Nancy Thomas, MD, of the UNC School of Medicine had the objective of comprehending the drive in young people to opt for tanning bed and how to construct ways of discouraging it and deterring its use. Skin cancer prevention for people of color

There’s a commonly prevailing false notion that somehow people of color are immune to skin cancer. However it’s true that compared to Caucasian, people of color have a lower chance of developing this ailment. Skin cancer is not easily detectable in people of color and when it is diagnosed it’s often in the late stages which makes it difficult to deal with. All this stands to change because of a study based on comprehensive review of available data that will make early detection and prevention of skin cancer possible for people of color.

According to a latest study published in the medical journal Biological Psychiatry mother’s touch or skin to skin contact with mother is essential for premature infants. The skin to skin contact has far reaching and beneficial effects on the lives of these infants which are evident even 10 years after the birth. The physical touch paves the way for normal physical and psychological development of the infant. The absence of physical contact manifests into several problems ranging from depression to assimilation into society as a productive and contributing member. These shortcomings were very obvious in infants who were deprived of skin to skin contact or were orphans.

Scientist create artificial skin using umbilical cord

artificial skin
Scientists at the University of Grenada have made a revolutionary breakthrough by creating artificially grown skin for immediate use. Artificially grown skin is not a new concept so why have we termed it “revolutionary”? Good question! For starters the main hurdle burn victims’ or people requiring skin grafts face is they have to wait for weeks because the artificial skin is being grown using healthy skin from their own body. This process will allow the skin to be stored in tissue banks and made available when needed.

The study of these scientists has been published in the journal Stem Cells Translation Medicine and depicts “The ability of Wharton jelly mesenschymal stem cells to turn to oral-mucosa or skin-regeneration epithelia.” In addition to skin regeneration epithelia covering the research team is also using biomaterial made of fibrin and agarose (designed and developed by the same team). It seems like making such breakthroughs is nothing new for this particular research team as they previously won universal acclaim on Tissue Engineering. The successful creation of artificial skin is the fruition of thesis put forth by the research team a few months ago in Seoul Korea. During the briefing the team postulated the potential of Wharton stem cells conversion into epithelia cells.

Thanks to this research major burn victims would have access to skin stored in tissue banks and which can be applied instantly to the areas of injury. This would almost cut down the waiting time for a patient to zero and curtail complications that arise because of waiting period. “Creating this new type of skin using stem cells, which can be stored in tissue banks, means that it can be used instantly when injuries are caused, and which would bring the application of artificial skin forward many weeks”, declared Professor Antonio Campos of Histology at the University of Granada and one of the authors of this study. When this process becomes available for common use it would hopefully become a routine clinical procedure and benefit trauma and burn victims the most.
